Welcome back to our Fresh Choice Nelson wine aficionado, Neil Hodgson. This week Neil writes about winter red wines in big bottles! Take it away Neil…
I love big bottles of wine. Not because they mean more for me to drink, but because I get to share them with others. They just seem to ooze generosity when you open one for friends around the dinner table.
As well as needing people to share these large bottles, they also last longer in the cellar, if you can resist opening them of course.
The Grocer has on his shelf at Fresh Choice Nelson has five red wines in magnums. They are sure to impress your friends when you open them, as well as being seriously good value. They are also perfect winter red wines for your dinner party!
Winter Red Wines – The Italians!
Two are Italian red wines produced by Pasqua, and both are priced at $18.99, a saving of $6, which is outstanding buying. The first is a 2017 Montepulciano from d’Abruzzo. This variety typically has delightfully soft, red berry fruit flavours without too much astringency.
The second is a Sangiovese from the Puglia region. You can expect Sangiovese to deliver slightly more complex and savoury characters with a focus on dark cherry flavours.
And from Australia…
The third magnum I think is outstanding buying comes from Australia. The Jim Berry Cover Drive Cabernet Sauvignon is $49.99, (a saving of $15). It is a typically generous and approachable wine from the Coonawarra in South Australia, but it also has layers of complexity that will impress when you serve it with a nice winter beef or venison dish.
Marlborough Reds.
The final two winter red wines in big bottles are from Seresin in Marlborough. The Seresin 2012 Rachel Pinot Noir is selling at $89.99, (a saving of $39). And the premium Seresin 2012 Home Pinot Noir is selling at $199.99, (a saving of $70). These are both certified organic, seriously complex, Pinot Noirs. They have been aged for you. It isn’t often you get to buy seven-year-old Pinot Noir that is drinking exceptionally well right now.
Large format bottles tick many boxes, but the most important one is that you need friends to share them with. That is what enjoying great wine is all about.
