Thanks to our Guest Blogger and beer aficionado… In this week’s article Denis “the man” Cooper writes about Two Thumb Brewing Company and their beers, which you can discover on the shelves at Fresh Choice Nelson.
Nelson is more than familiar with the thumb gesture judging by the number of tourists seen standing on the highway trying to cadge a ride… But thumbs have a more meaningful significance for the Nelson craft beer buff. It’s the Two Thumb Brewing Company that gives them a lift.
Mark and Dave, two lads from Yorkshire, have built on the firm foundation, great reputation, and detailed brewing processes laid down by the two Kiwis who originally created the Two Thumb Brewing Company.
Their core range is not the craggy Two thumbs mountain tops in north Canterbury which inspired the brewery, but the five unique and delicious beer styles listed below.
Two Thumbs Kolsch: A German-style ale that is brewed like a lager, mostly with pilsner malts. However, the Two Thumbs Kolsch is much more than just a lager, combining fruity aromatics with tastes of honey, tangy citrus and a hint of wheat to give an invigorating bite… Pure delish and delightfully refreshing.
Oatmeal Stout: A magnificently malty mouth massage, smooth as a baby’s thumb with roasty malt, coffee, chocolate, dates and a hint of ash resulting in a slightly sweet but warming finish, perfect for these colder nights.
Hop Helmet: An extremely well balanced IPA… Like caramelised hop cones with both hops and malt flavours showing their hands. Strawberry hop flavours and caramel toffee malts result in a very easy drinking seven percenter.
New Zealand Pale Ale: This 5.4 percenter has similar flavour profiles as the Helmet but with more pronounced malt flavours at the fore. Big sweet caramel toffee notes are perfectly matched with autumn fruit hop flavours to balance out the bitterness. It starts bitter yet finishes sweet.
Red Rye IPA 6%: Another well-balanced brew that sports a gentle rye and hops combination which works well to deliver a very enjoyable drinking experience.
A definite thumbs up for Two Thumb Brewing Company. So get those thumbs up and hitch a ride down to Fresh Choice Nelson and knock the top off a Two Thumbs or two.
